[i]luneseulepiec posting in [i]naturalliving:

I'm doing a follow up to my post the other day, mostly because there were so many responses!! Thank you for the information, I probably should have clarified. Right now I do use fleece in my cage and nothing else, but I was wondering if I could possibly switch to aspen. I don't use pine or cedar but I was just making the reference of yeah...wood shavings like those.

I use fleece with my spiny mice, and my chinchilla too! The only ones that get bedding of any kind are my hamsters, I used to use fleece or other things with them but...I find that it's not the greatest for odor control and they are now back on aspen shavings.

Looking for better odor control mostly. I do wash the bedding once a week.

I was just curious if there was a greener healthier way to dispose of the shavings. I don't want to add to any dump problems that there are already are. I would just like to know what I can do to use them more, or dispose of them that isn't harmful to the environment.

I have two ratties in my cage, My rex rat Slinky, and my little blue rat Marvolo.

I've been reading about composting and it still confuses me. (goes off to do even more research)

[i]ninefourteen posting in [i]vegancooking: Sweet & Sticky Tempeh!

My husband and I have made a little tradition for ourselves, in that we try out one new recipe a week and then add it to our recipe rotation (if we like it, of course). I've never had so much variety in my life..way more than when I was a meat eater.

This past Sunday we tried this recipe and paired it up with some couscous left over from the night before.

Recipe in Here )

I just thought I'd share a picture in case anyone thinks of trying the recipe, as I love to have a visual before deciding to make something, but I'd definitely recommend trying this one out!

[i]lilgreeneyedgrl posting in [i]naturalliving: large scale compostin

I teach at a middle school in RRISD, but it is located in North Austin.  Some other teachers and I are extremely interested in starting a cafeteria composting program with the kids.  We are hoping to get grant money to pay for all the supplies and materials needed.  Most of us have personal composting experience, but we are doing some research on composting on a much larger scale.

So, I am looking for resources/ideas.  Is anyone else doing this in town?  Know of any "compost experts" who might want to come speak to/demonstrate for middle schoolers?  Ideas for where to buy the things we would need (bins, worms, etc) that are cheap/would cut us a deal since it's for school?

Also, my prinicipal is concerned that there might be restrictions with the composting due to health issues/rodents.  She asked us to make sure that we are "allowed" to compost before we write the grant.  Where would I find out about any such restrictions?  I don't believe my school is in the city limits of either Round Rock or Austin, so I'm not sure who is "in charge" of us.

Any ideas, suggestions, thoughts, concerns would be great.  We're really excited to get this project off the ground but we want to think it through thoroughyl and troubleshoot any potential problems beforehand.

Thanks!

[i]mcprice74 posting in [i]naturalliving: I want to KILL the Stomach BUG!

Okay, I need some serious help, in more ways than one.

I am emetophobic and on top of that, germaphobic.

To make things even more interesting, I have been TRYING to get away from hideous stuff like bleach and antibacterial products.

The dilemma-there's a stomach bug going around my locale and my daughter's got it. I am trying to stifle the urge to Pine-Sol and bleach everything to death. Boiling everything isn't really an option either, we are talking clothing, toys, sheets, doorknobs.

I am in a panic because I don't want to spread the joy (or let it linger around my house).

Any ideas or should I bleach the crap (pardon the pun) out of everything?? I want to go natural, but I am freaking out here.

Would appreciate any ideas you guys might have...

[i]mikatah posting in [i]cloth_pads: Pre-teen pads

Has anyone made pads especially for pre-teen girls. I want to make some for my niece but I'm not sure what would work best. I've made various all-in-one and insert pads in the past, but I'm not sure what would work best for her. She hasn't started menstruating yet, but her mom and I both started before we were 10 so it may not be far off. I'd like to present her with her own "kit" when she starts. Her mom and I both use cloth pads so I don't think it would be wierd

[i]freespirit_me posting in [i]vegetarian: Yet another recipe request post

The jet-lag is mostly gone, and hopefully this post will be slightly better-written. ;)

So, I am in search of easy veggie recipes that don't require 500 ingredients.  My Mum is doing tons of meal planning, and while I do love making supper, I am crazy busy, and rely on her cooking a lot, which is working well, because she is getting happier and happier with veggie meals.  She would like meals that can be made quickly and easily, and that perhaps work for them to have meat with and me to have alone.  Odd, I know, but true. :)

Ideas?

Thanks a bunch,
Christine

[i]hummuscyde posting in [i]cheapvegan: Corn bread with extra Awesome

So I saw a suggestion in [info]harliquinnraver's post a couple weeks about cutting up little chunks of smart dogs and baking them into corn bread. I took the idea and ran with with. Adding black beans, peas, nutritional yeast, braggs, copious garam masala, a few dashes of back pepper and sea salt, and a bunch of fake bacon bits. The result was win of epic proportions.

[i]rsilvergun posting in [i]menstrual_cups: So I've received my Lunette, but I've yet to try it.

This isn't a particularly important post, but I got my Lunette this past Saturday. I decided to order the size 2 since it was larger and I'm turning 20 next week. I ordered it off this online store called Leastore  because they were offering a deal for the cup with a bottle of cleaner. Well, it came in and I was surprised at how small it was. It looked bigger on here, but that's probably due to the zoom on the image. I'm going to try it as soon as I clean my bathroom and I hope it goes well on my first dry run. One question though: Do I have to boil it before I use it? I remember reading that instruction for the Diva Cup on the Diva Cup website.

[i]wendolen: here we go again

headache notes for later:

it's been hurting for about 4 hours now, getting worse. I figured it was hypoglycemia at first due to crappy dinner and no breakfast, but I've eaten (and dosed with caffeine) and it's worse.

It's that same eyebrow-level iron band sensation. Worse on the right, but I wouldn't call it one-sided.

Stomach feels a bit weird - not nausea, just kind of hollow and agitated. Mama was asking me about abdominal stuff when I thought I was migraining before. Stomach has probably felt like this since the headache began, but it's not a strong sensation and I was hungry earlier.

edit, 3:45: headache more definitely on the right now. stomach more weird, and I'm getting sweaty and clammy. Is this just because I'm paying attention to sensations instead of deliberately ignoring them, or am I actually worse this time? no idea.

edit, son of edit, 4:20: sweats have resolved to, basically, the horrible shaky sweaty feeling you get all over when you're about to throw up. It's like every part of my body except my stomach is nauseated. I'm leaving work.

[i]wholesomelymid posting in [i]vegancooking: Lentil tacos; baked brown rice

I was craving something--anything--wrapped in a corn tortilla. Usually my brother likes tacos with soy crumbles, but I don't like the taste. Beans are always good, but I wanted to try something different: lentil tacos.

I googled and found this (non vegan) recipe, changed a few things around, and ended up with this.

I used red lentils because they're smaller. That means that they cook faster, and more closely approximate the texture of taco filling. But you could easily use regular lentils--just cook it longer.

Also, Alton Brown has an awesome way of cooking brown rice: baking it! Usually I use a rice cooker, but when I don't I have a hard time making it non-soggy on the stove (plus it always sticks to the pan.) This way the texture is great, you can ignore it for an hour, and you don't have to worry about scrubbing the pan. Here's the recipe.

[i]eqfe posting in [i]organic_garden:

I just planted a few varieties of peas in a raise bed with about 80 days to go until my first frost.  Any chance I'll get some peas out of this experiment.

Until this year I always view peas as a cover crop.  In NJ it seemed like no matter how early I planted, it got hot right around the time the plants went to flower and the plants died off.  I'm now gardening for the first year in Southern Maryland, and this spring I got my first crop of peas.

thanks all.

Sorry if I seem ignorant or naive. I am new to vegetarianism. I've been trying bean dishes, but I honestly really hate the taste of beans and I don't care for tofu. What am I supposed to eat?

I would like to add a section to the community info page that lists a bunch of topics that fall under natural living - things one can find discussed here.

Please respond with what is natural living to you.

For example:
organics, bicycling to work, plastic-free, no preservatives, buying second hand, etc.

[i]steve_c: Praise be for the DVD

Bountiful Amazon has delivered to me the first 13 episodes of the 1930's Flash Gordon (where flash is an aryan polo player rather than a quarterback). I'm now most of the way through disk one - containing episodes 1-7; it's every bit as wonderful as I remember - like concentrated televisual Edgar Rice Burrows. All for less than ten earth pounds.

Soon, the Internet will deliver to me Attack of the Crab Monsters. Happy days.
